I often mailed to my folks new and cancelled stamps over the many years. My dad particularly enjoyed any stamps involved with airplanes or space travel. I had collected stamps as a kid and still bought commemorative stamps at the Post Office whenever they issued something of interest. I usually purchased an extra sheet for my folks. My folks would save all the ones they liked. I found these recently and had not seen in years. They had put together a nice little group on a piece of buff arches watercolor paper. My dad's favorite ships are presented very orderly here below. A nice illustration of a B-17 Flying Fortress that my father piloted with the 95th Bomb Group and the 334th Squadron at Horham Airfield in England. He flew combat from February 1944 till his final and 35th mission on August 26th, 1944. Next to that is the B-24 Liberator that he loved to see flying and third is the B-29 Superfortress. In September of 1944 he put in a transfer to fly the B-29 after he completed his combat flying at Horham. The P-47 Thunderbolt and the P-51 Mustang that protected him and the 334th on many a mission. He originally wanted to fly the P-47 in 1942/1943 when he was in training in San Antonio and was fortunate to fly (photo below) one in 1944. Also here is the Lockheed Constellation that he worked on in the 1950s when he was a designer at Lockheed in Burbank, California. In the late 1960s he moved onto their Skunk Works Project till he retired in 1988. All in all this is just another example of my father's love of airplanes. |
