January 24th marked quite a day for my father, Lt. Ernest Anders Erickson of the 95th Bomb Group and the 334th Squadron. He and crew touched down in England on January 24th, 1944 arriving from a stop-over in Prestwick in South Ayrshire on the west coast of Ayrshire in Scotland. Same airfield that in 1960 Elvis Presley first arrived in England when his Army transport stopped en route from Germany. Ernest was off in February to the Royal Air Force Station Stoney Cross and the Station code referred to as"SS." The crew would stay at Stoney Cross till late in February and then be off to Royal Air Force Alconbury. The departed from Alconbury after a short stay heading to their permanent assignment at Horham Airfield (Station 119), where they would complete 35 missions. Lt. Ernest Anders Erickson's Full 35 Missions List Ernest had put in a transfer in August of 1944 to fly the B-29 Super Fortress after he completed his duties at Horham. While he awaited that he flew repaired and new ships sent to England to prepare them for combat flying. In mid September Ernest received orders he would be heading back to the states for assignment and he looked forward first to a visit to his family in Bismarck. The first stop-over after leaving England was in Iceland. He wrote this letter from the British Royal Air Force Airfield in Reykjavik to his parents and 4 year old sister Dian (Dinny).
