My cousins Nick Boutrous on the right and his brother Michael went out to Riverview near Wilton in Maclean County, North Dakota to pay respects to our family members. They did some clean up around the various family headstones. In particular interest is always our uncle Ernest Julius Erickson (below photograph of his headstone). Ernest Julius was killed on October 10th, 1918 in the Argonne Forest in France. It was only a month before the Armistice. His diary entry from that period can be seen in the link here. Also below are my grandfather Frank Gustaf Severin Erickson and uncle Sture Albin Nelson at the dedication of the Riverview Memorial which occurred on May 30th, 1921. The full story of the memorial and the family connection to Riverview. Thanks to the director Mark Levitch who was so kind and diligent in adding the Riverview Memorial near Wilton, North Dakota to The World War I Memorial Inventory Project in Washington D.C. The project honors the centennial of the Great War by assembling an inventory of World War I memorials and monuments in the United States and it's territories. The project is in partnership with the United States World War I Centennial Commission. The Registry and "Monuments Inspector" invites and enables public participation in locating, documenting, and providing preliminary assessments of all World War I memorials and monuments in the states. Ranging from simple to the overwhelming, these memorials are spread across the landscape of the states. Some are overlooked and often in poor condition. The World War I Memorial Inventory Project will be instrumental in contributing to the memorials' physical and cultural rehabilitation. Riverview as you can see from the photograph below is a well kept peaceful environment in which to visit the many family members resting there. It is part of a significant family history. |
