As my father Ernest Anders Erickson wrote on the back of this photograph: "Ma behind the wheel on the farm with Sod House in the background." That's my grandmother at fifteen years old, Clara Amelia Yunhild (Erickson) Nelson on the family farm in Painted Woods, North Dakota in 1918. As long as I knew her, she never drove, but back then, it must have been a thrill. If you look at the indicator lights (resembling lanterns) and the slight squat section just before the engine cowling begins, that makes this beauty a '1918 Model T Ford.' Most specifically, this Ford, is the 'Touring Model' which had raised and sprung drivers seat, and extra passenger seats! The Model T was made famous by Laurel and Hardy in late 1920s to the mid-1940s, for their use during their slapstick comedies, when the car was long outdated. |
