A remarkable photograph of four generations of the Nelson Olson Hultberg Family Opal (Olson) Hultberg was born on July 15th, 1917, in Chapin, North Dakota. Chapin was a mining camp located just east of Wilton. Her parents were Ole J. and Nellie C. (Nelson) Olson. Nellie was the daughter of August and Amelia (Aunt Molly) Nelson who were born in Sweden. Opal was raised and educated in Wilton, graduating with the class of 1935. She was employed at the state capitol building in Bismarck, until her marriage to Walfred “Wallie” Hultberg on February 12th, 1941, in Bismarck. They lived and raised their two sons Douglas and Robert on the Hultberg family farm located in Sverdrup Township of McLean County near Washburn. During their years in Washburn, Opal was a member of First Lutheran Church. She served as secretary and was on the building committee and was privileged to take part in the laying of the cornerstone when the church was dedicated in 1960. Opal and Wallie spent time in Arizona and had a residence in Bismarck. Wallie passed in December of 1986 in Mesa, Ariz. Opal continued to live in Bismarck and Mesa. She later moved to Minot to be near her son Douglas and daugher-in-law Barbara Hultberg. Opal had a great love for family and friends. She enjoyed cooking, reading, traveling, card playing, crossword puzzles and was a fierce scrabble player. Memberships to First Lutheran Church and American Legion Auxiliary were carried during her life. She is deeply missed by her family and all that knew her. Thanks to Douglas Hultberg for passing onto me this beautiful photograph of his mother Opal, Grandmother Nellie and his great grandmother Amelia (Aunt Molly) Nelson. |
