My grandparents Max (Maximilian) & Blanche Rose (Nathan) Hesslein with my mom Bernice (Erickson) Hesselin at 20 years old walking past the Roxy Theater on West 50th Street between 6th and 7th Avenue in New York City in 1945.
The photo restoration on this photo went through some unusual steps and frustrations for Nathan Howland and his recent tale of that is well worth adding here along with his beautifully completed restoration of the photograph.
Nathan's Dream begins: "I dreamed I was standing on the opposite corner of the image in NYC, just imagine this photograph turned 3D. I can see the car approaching the corner in front of me, and can see the trio of your mother and grandparents, 'stopped' frozen, in frame...but from the side. In my head I said "Oh f*&k this, this image is haunting me now!" And this soft woman's voice said, "Beautiful day don't you think? and so it was.....you have no idea how much fun we had!" I kept calm and just said, "You do know it has been driving me mad don't you? Which was met with a wonderful laugh....very infectious.....and she said " Oh...my dear, don't give up so easily. 'Perseverance' Nathan, that's what's got me where I am today, it's ingrained in me." .....and again followed by a really infectious laugh. I went to turn my head to look.....and immediately woke up! I had to get up out of bed, and go drink some water and stood on the balcony for about 10 minutes and then went back to bed. My wife Diana rolled over, asked if I was ok, and I said I would tell her in the morning."
The next morning a friend of his Alex, a fellow professional artist wrote him with just the right encouragement and technique that Nathan needed to complete the restoration and color. That you can see here in living color.
