My grandfather Frank Severin Erickson in La Grande, Oregon when he and his brother Ernest Julius Erickson were deputies on the Oregon Railroad in 1917. La Grande's name comes from an early French settler, Charles Dause, who often used the phrase "La Grande" to describe the area's beauty. The town lies east of the Blue Mountains. La Grande grew rapidly during the late 1860s and early 1870s, partially because of the region's many gold mines and the valley's agriculture. In 1884, the railroad came to La Grande. By the time of the U.S. involvement in World War I, deputies were hired for security to patrol the railways and tunnels. By the end of 1917, Frank and Ernest Julius had joined the army and were awaiting to be called up to service. Both would serve in the AEF (American Expeditionary Force) on the Western Front in France in 1918.
