When my grandfather Pvt. Frank G. S. Erickson emerged through 'the pocket' of the Argonne on October 8th, 1918 along with the rest of the survivors of the 308th Infantry I truly wonder if the first thing on their mind was to pose for group photographs. But indeed they did and both are below.

The book published in 2005 'Five Days in October: The Lost Battalion by Robert Ferrell utilizes one of the images for it's cover.

I am proud to see Frank on the book jacket standing at attention along with his comrades after the most intense ordeals of their lives. The images to me are iconic and trace a time that has long held mystery and awe in our family in what Frank accomplished.

The two original photographs are below and Frank is marked by an arrow in both images.
