A meal the men of the 'Lost Battalion' looked forward to for days. Their ordeal was over and the survivors that escaped out of 'the pocket' on October 8th, 1918 were long overdue for a good hardy chow-down. My grandfather Pvt. Frank G.S Erickson as often not, was front and center when a camera was around. Frank is marked with an arrow below in photograph. Two of my favorite photographs taken of him below were the images I grew up with. They were framed on the walls, in photo albums and I made postcards and posters of them. They were to me the significant images of my grandpa. Frank gave me both, knowing I would appreciate. This website is in a big part dedicated to Frank and his older brother, Ernest Julius Erickson (two photos below). The first photograph below is from 1918 when Frank was with the American Expeditionary Force. The second image was when he was an Oregon Railroad Deputy serving out of La Grande, a year before he joined the AEF in 1917. Similar in time, the first photograph of Ernest Julius was taken at Camp Lewis during his training with the AEF in late 1917. The second image, taken by Frank when they were both Oregon Railroad Deputies serving out of La Grande before the war. |
