Lt. Ernest Anders Erickson's flight notes for the May 24th, 1944 mission, his 15th, over Berlin, Germany. During his time with the 95th Bomb Group and the 334th Squadron Lt. Erickson piloted twelve B-17s during his tour of duty at Horham Airfield, England, between March 27th and August 26th, 1944.

The ships names and identification numbers were:
Lili of the Lamplight (44-6085) * Taint A Bird II (230342) * Fireball Red (231876) * Able Mable (231920) * Mirandy (231992) * Gen'ril Oop & Lili Brat (231993) * To Hell Or Glory (238123) * Ten Aces (238178) * Smilin' Sandy Sanchez (297290) * Palsano (2102450) The Doodle Bug / What’s Cookin? (2107047) and his final and 35th mission flying Stand By / Goin' My Way (21072014).

The 2nd image below is called, 'Mayhem Over Berlin' and is a fitting title for a situation very few of us would ever imagine encountering ourselves. Yet this scenario is another incredibly intense situation my father experienced during his combat flying days in England in 1944.

I grew up contemplating what it must have felt like flying a B-17 in combat. Here in the painting in that mid-day over Berlin one can sense the chaotic times during that mission.

The original concept of the piece came from this one page of mission notes from the Berlin raid. The words he writes are filled with intensity and action. To imagine being up there with him and the crew is extreme and quite frightening.

The final image below is the crew of the 'Lili of the Lamplight' (44-6085).
