Lt. Ernest Anders Erickson Air Corps 1942 - 1945

Lt. Ernest Anders Erickson of the Army Air Corps poses for a photograph in the early morning hours on June 6, 1944.

He had just completed his 21st mission targeting Calais/ Boulogne on the Western coast of France in support of the June 6th Invasion of Nazi occupied Europe.

Lt. Erickson was a B-17 pilot with the 95th Bomb Group stationed with the 8th Air Force at Horham Airfield in East Anglia, England. He had fourteen missions to go to complete his 35 Combat Mission Tour of Duty.

A recent Happy Birthday to the coolest dad on the high seas of Venice. During his time in the Army Air Corps, he was called Lindy by his crew, as he resembled his childhood hero, Charles Lindbergh.

By the time he arrived at Lockheed Aircraft/ Skunk Works, he was known as 'E Squared.' And here is some of his amusing E Squared arithmetic. "2 + 2 = 4, 4 + 4 = 8, simple as that. Now you will remember my birthday," he said to his 4-year-old son.

Horham Airfield was planned and built for the Royal Air Force (RAF) use, but was handed over to the Eighth Air Force and was used initially by the 47th Bomb Group. When the 47th joined the Twelfth Air Force. In early January 1943, Horham became the home to the B-26 Marauders of the 323rd Bomb Group.

The 323rd were transferred to Earls Colne in June 1943, and Horham then became the final base in England of the 95th Bomb Group, which flew B-17 missions from the airfield until the end of the war in Europe.
