My grandparents Max (Maximilian) & Blanche Rose (Nathan) Hesslein with my mom, Bernice Lane (Erickson) Hesslein at 20 years old are all shown here in 1945. They are striding happily down West 50th Street, between 6th and 7th Avenue with the Roxy Theater in the background in New York City. The film they had just seen was, 'Where Do We Go From Here.' Fred MacMurray stars as World War II soldier Bill Morgan, who wants nothing more than to serve his country in uniform so he can successfully court Joan Leslie as Sally Smith, the girl of his dreams. Lucilla Powell, played by June Haver also stars in this film. When Morgan encounters Gene Sheldon as Ali, a wise-cracking genie with the power to make his dreams come true, he is sent spiraling backward through time, joining the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. There he talks his way into a blindfold in front of a Hessian firing squad; sailing with Columbus on his maiden voyage to the New World; and to Dutch New Amsterdam, where his sale of the island leads to his arrest for tax evasion. Now that is an amusing plot, and well worth seeing this 1945 film, the year the war ended. Directed by Gregory Ratoff and featuring music by Kurt Weill and Ira Gershwin. Not bad at all!! |
