A nice portrait I took of my father Ernest Anders Erickson standing before Stonehenge in England. He had visited the site in 1944 on leave from the Air Corps when he was stationed at Horham Airfield during his combat flying days piloting a B-17 with the 95th Bomb Group during the war. He talked often about the massive stones my entire childhood and wanted me to visit Stonehenge with him. We were living in Italy at the time and headed to the British Isles one summer for a three week car trip around Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England. You can see on his face how happy he is to be there. Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England, north of Salisbury. An expansive ring of large stones, each standing 13 feet high (4.1 meters) by 12 feet (2.1 meters) wide and weighing around twenty five tons each, marks an impressive sight to the eye. The stones are set within earthworks in the middle of a very dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds. Below is a graphic of how Stonehenge would have been seen from the air before the powers that be fenced in and commercialized the area around the stones. Tourism baby!! |
