Some months later, Frank joined the American Expeditionary Forces (A.E.F.) and trained at Camp Lewis near Tacoma, Washington. In the Spring of 1918, he boarded a troop ship bound for Liverpool, England. Soon afterwards, Frank was serving in combat on the Western Front of France, as a Runner/Rifleman with Company H of the 308th Infantry and 77th Division.

Frank made it through the Meuse Argonne Offensive and the Forest D’Argonne Defensive. He was awarded the Silver Star for his actions during the Lost Battalion Siege in October of 1918. Later, he was recommended for the Congressional Medal of Honor by both the North Dakota Governor and U.S. Senator.

Frank was born in Sundsvall, Västernorrland (Western Norrland), Sweden, and lives forever on the Great Northern Plains of North Dakota
