Operating out of La Grande and Weatherby, Oregon, railroad deputies specialized in securing tracks, bridges, tunnels, property, and freight. Their deployment began in early 1917, just before the United States entered World War I, during a precarious time when the nation feared sabotage of its vital railway network.
